A Book to Love

To pick out just one children's book that I love is a hard task.  That is like asking me to pick one favorite kind of chocolate...impossible, I love them all!  But to narrow down my love for a kind of chocolate...I suppose I could choose dark chocolate.  And to narrow down my love for children's books, I would have to choose Dr. Seuss books.  I love to read rhythmic and rhyming books that can be silly, such as "Hop on Pop", or heartwarming  and life lesson books like "Horton Hears a Who". Children love these books too.  They speak to them on their level and understanding.  Just love it!

However, my all time favorite Dr. Seuss book is "The Lorax".  When I read it as a child it spoke to me, and still touches my heart every time I read it with my children as an adult.  So much so, that I have a tattoo of a Truffula tree on my leg with the quote that headlines my blog: "A person's a person, no matter how small".  I think that you can learn a variety of lessons from this story and where you are in life.  The book begins in a sad and bleak area that has been deforested out of greed.  The narrator, Once-ler, tells the story to the boy Ned of how things came to be the way they were.  The Once-ler gives him the last Trufulla seed and puts the future in his hands.  The story concludes with the morale that if one person cares and makes a difference, that is a step towards positive change and will make an impact.  This is a powerful lesson that I believe everyone should entertain and embrace in life.  As an Early Childhood Educator, I like to think I am planting little seeds all the time and making a change for the better everyday.

"Unless someone like you care a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.  It's not."-Dr. Seuss
